Great Art Is Defined By Its Subject Matter

Some say that art is art, no matter what its subject. I say that a great artist can become even greater by choosing the right subject matter. Kirsten Johnson has certainly done that with her moving one-woman show called touchy-feely. It features a wide range of emotions as acted out by talented sock puppets, rendered by the artist in oils and chalk on small chalkboards. There are 40 images in the exhibit, and each one moves me to tears. My favorite is Drunkenly Amorous, shown at left. For some reason, it speaks to me.
